# How website chat works

Learn how Answer Cloud chat retrieves published site content, where it appears, what conversations contain, and how to check that answers are useful.

Reviewed November 1, 2026

Answer Cloud chat lets a visitor ask a question about your website and receive an answer informed by its published content. It can help visitors find an explanation, compare services, or reach the right page without navigating the whole site.

The quality of the answer depends on the available source content and successful retrieval. Publishing a page does not guarantee that every question will receive a complete answer, and a fluent response is not proof that its facts are correct.

## How a question becomes an answer

The chat retrieves relevant indexed pages, generates a response using the available context, and can return references to those pages. A follow-up continues the same conversation. Check references against the site's actual canonical URLs, especially when an organization manages several websites.

For example, if your service page clearly explains the area you serve and how to request a quote, a visitor can ask “Do you work in Denver, and how do I get started?” If the page omits that information, add a reviewed answer rather than expecting the model to invent one.

## Hosted and external websites

On an Answer Cloud hosted site, the platform adds its generated chat integration when publishing. Use the site's supported widget configuration for its label, greeting, and stylesheet. Do not add a second embed script to the Astro source.

On a website hosted elsewhere, install the [external embed](https://www.answer.cloud/docs/chat/installation/) with the intended organization and site settings. Your existing host continues serving the main website. Check the selected site's plan and feature availability before diagnosing a missing capability as an installation error.

## Conversations and forms

Your site's [Conversations](https://www.answer.cloud/docs/chat/conversations/) screen records chat activity for review. It does not show a visitor's independent conversations in ChatGPT, Claude, or other outside services.

[Contact forms](https://www.answer.cloud/docs/chat/forms/) can also create a conversation, save named fields, and let visitors continue in chat. A captured submission and a delivered notification are separate outcomes. Publish a clear contact expectation instead of promising an immediate human reply.

## Verify before relying on chat

Ask one specific, non-sensitive question with an answer on a published page. Confirm a useful reply, follow the references, and try a short follow-up. Also test keyboard use, mobile layout, and the ability to close and reopen the widget.

If no relevant page is retrieved, inspect publication and indexing. If relevant pages are retrieved but answer generation fails, investigate the message request separately.
