# Measure human referrals from AI services

Measure recorded human visits with AI-service referrers, compare them carefully with GA4, and explain missing attribution without equating referrals to crawls.

Reviewed November 1, 2026

An AI referral is a recorded human page view whose referrer matches a recognized AI-service pattern. It indicates an identifiable visit from that service. It is different from an AI bot requesting your page to retrieve or index content.

For example, a crawler can fetch your pricing page while preparing an answer. A person can later click a link to that page. Those are different requests, and only the second can appear as a human referral when its referrer is available and recognized.

## Read the Referrals screen

Select the intended site, open **Analytics**, then **Referrals** when reporting data is available. Use a consistent reporting period and inspect the destination pages alongside the source names.

The classification recognizes patterns for services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and others. Pattern coverage is product-specific and can change. A broad search-engine visit is not automatically evidence of an AI answer; for example, ordinary Bing traffic should not be assumed to come from Copilot.

AI referral counts are a subset of recorded human page views. Do not add referrals to human visits as an additional population. One person can also produce more than one recorded view.

## Understand missing referrers

A service, browser, application, redirect, or privacy setting can omit or reduce the referrer. Copying a URL into a browser may also remove the original context. Such visits can appear without an identifiable AI source.

A zero referral count therefore means no matching recorded referrals in that scope and period. It does not establish that no visitor saw your organization mentioned in an AI answer. Likewise, a recognized referral does not prove the exact wording or sentiment of the outside answer.

## Compare with Google Analytics

Compare the same public hostname, dates, timezone assumptions, and unit. GA4 reports sessions, users, and events according to its configuration; Answer Cloud's traffic charts count recorded views. Browser consent, blockers, edge coverage, redirects, and referrer-pattern differences can produce different totals.

Use recognizable source/medium values and reviewed channel rules in your existing GA4 property. Keep any GA4 tag managed through the site's established installation. On Answer Cloud hosted pages, the platform can generate configured Google Analytics tags; do not add duplicate snippets merely to force two reports to match.

## Measure what happens after the visit

Inspect landing-page usefulness and relevant site conversations or form inquiries. Use your actual attribution process before connecting a referral to a lead or sale. A chatbot mention, a referral, a captured form, and a completed purchase each need their own evidence.
